RANDALL'S ISLAND MARSH GARDEN

Location

New York City, New York, USA

Status:

Planned

A proposal to reimagine Randall's Island's underused event lawn through the principles of cradle-to-cradle design. Existing pathways are retained, circulation is upgraded for sea-level rise, and a new ferry dock connects the island more generously to the city. Topographical changes allow salt marshes to migrate inland, quietly reconnecting urban life with wetland ecology. Invasive Phragmites australis is addressed through a community harvesting program, its material repurposed to construct structures inspired by Lenape longhouses and Iraqi mudhifs.
