Reconstruction of a Byzantine ornamental garden at the ancient Negev Desert town of Shivta. Archaeobotanical pollen analysis and charcoal remains identify fruit trees, Mediterranean conifers, and imported cedar of Lebanon, cultivated through irrigation and imported soils in a hyper-arid environment. The presence of non-native ornamental species at a remote desert settlement speaks to the prosperity, horticultural ambition, and long-distance trade connections of Byzantine Negev society.
