Archaeological reconstruction of Herod the Great's terraced mausoleum garden at Herodium, built on the slopes of an artificial mountain in the Judean Desert. Archaeobotanical pollen analysis from garden soils and architectural excavation data identified evergreen cypress, pine, olive, and date palm planted in deliberate layers to frame the bright limestone tomb structure. The garden's dense planting created a dark backdrop that rendered the Herodian monument visible from Jerusalem, fifteen kilometers away, demonstrating how Roman garden design principles were deployed to enhance monumental architecture and express royal power.
